This article analyzes the relationship between the environment, sustainability, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria, highlighting the impacts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and technological acceleration on natural resource consumption, waste production, and climate change. It examines the evolution of the concept of sustainable development from the Global Compact (Brundtland Report 1987) to its consolidation in contemporary corporate practices, particularly through the triple bottom line (profit, planet, and people). The study demonstrates how ESG principles have become central to corporate governance, not only as a reputational tool but also as a strategy for corporate survival and competitiveness. It also analyzes the judgment of Special Appeal No. 684,753 – PR, reported by Justice Antônio Carlos Ferreira, in which the Superior Court of Justice recognized the manufacturer’s responsibility for the life cycle of PET packaging, in a way connecting this decision to ESG principles. It is concluded that the internalization of sustainable practices within the corporate sphere is no longer optional, but rather an ethical, social, and economic condition for achieving a balance between development, governance, and environmental preservation.
